2014 Green Living Show

A Healthier You. A Healthier Planet. http://www.greenlivingshow.ca

THANK YOU!

Firstly, CMAAC wishes to acknowledge the generous support of our fellow exhibitors at the 2014 Green Living Show.  Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture enjoyed a prominent booth that was “front and centre” in the health wing thanks to: Carbo Medical Supplies and the Shiatsu School of Canada Inc., and SSC Acupuncture Institute.

Secondly, our success at this event would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and commitment from our CMAAC members and friends who volunteered to staff the pavilion. The people listed below spent tireless energy over the three days of the show engaging with the public to share the positive benefits of  TCM and acupuncture:

  • Frederic Cheung, R.TCMP
  • Jane Cheung, R.TCMP
  • Daryl Fang, R.Ac
  • Christine Fung, R.TCMP
  • Sayeeda Hosein-Holchein, R.TCMP.
  • Jireh Leung (4th year TCM student)
  • Emmanuel Leung
  • Brian Phillips, R.TCMP

Here are some of the main information points which we highlighted to attendees:

  1. According to WHO, we can help with more than 200 conditions (Much more than “just” pain!)
  2. We have modalities beyond acupuncture needles: cupping, moxibustion, Chinese herbal medicine, nutrition, etc.
  3. In China, physicians of TCM and Acupuncture have been primary healthcare providers for thousands of years.
  4. TCM practitioners and Acupuncturists go to school for a long time (four years of study is the norm)
  5. There are over 2000 registered practitioners in Ontario.  Bookmarks with a link to the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario (CTCMPAO) website were provided to help people in their search for a qualified practitioner.  In Ontario, most insurance companies will only cover acupuncture performed by registered members of the CTCMPAO.

As registered members of CTCMPAO, we provided professional mini-sessions at our booth described as a ‘Spring Tune-Up: $20 for 20 minutes’.  This included a consultation combined with nutrition, acupuncture, and/or tuina services. All proceeds were donated to the Continuing Education and Promotion Programs offered by CMAAC.

Over the three days, the show hosted more than 30, 000 health-minded and environmentally conscious attendees.

Also, CMAAC want to thank Laurie Simmonds, President and CEO, Green Living Enterprises, for contacting CMAAC with her innovative ideas.  She and her staff have been very supportive of our profession, and it was a great pleasure working with her and her well-organized and creative team.

Lastly, Jane Cheung, R.TCMP, and Justin Ngui, R.TCMP, were invited speakers on the health stage during the show and provided their insights into ‘The Classical Foundations of Chinese Medicine: A Modern Perspective’  which highlighted the history and influences of TCM, the importance of TCM philosophy and approach in today’s world and for today’s health, and even included a demonstration of qi gong and feng shui.

Green Living = Healthy Living?

During the CMAAC presentation at the Green Living Show, one of the points of emphasis was the description of how the foundations of TCM are also applicable to a healthier environment.  Some of the main concepts for “Green Living” have direct similarities to TCM health.

  • Sustainability – where we want to preserve our planet for the future is an important concept for our own health.
  • Resilience – the ability to endure, and maybe even become stronger through adversity is vital to both as well.
  • Holism – Learning to think of the earth holistically is the only way we can start to understand the big problems of our day. It is the same for us as people.
  • Harmony – we must never forget that we are part of the ‘circle of life’ and the only way to bring harmony to the earth is to be a source of harmony yourself.
