Research Article: Acupuncture with DE QI...(CMAJ 2013)

From the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) on April 2, 2013:

Effectiveness of strengthened stimulation during acupuncture for the treatment of Bell Palsy: a randomized controlled trial.

http://www.cmaj.ca/content/185/6/473.full?sid=d6b545f7-962e-49de-a966-4db7203ef719

From a TCM/A perspective, this research article provoked awareness of our potential future role in integrated medicine because:

1. This research is from China and published in a Western medicial jounral in North America. Not often do we find acupuncture research that fits the Western medicine research protocal without these usual obstacles:

a.acupuncture is not simply the act of needling

b.the outcomes of treatment in acupuncture trials are usually subjective

          c. participants in acupuncture trials usually know which treatment they have had

2. This research attempts to isolate the effect of needling (vs. placebo effect) by implementing a better form of acupuncture- the sensation of heat or DE QI induced by manipulating the needles.

Conclusion: 1.manipulation of acupuncture needles resulted in better functionaly recovery from facial palsy than when the needles were left immobile. 2. it is time that acupuncture became more mainstream, both with more research into its mechanisms and as a treatment to which more patients have access

(Mar. 28, 2013) Statement from the Transitional Council

Statement by the Transitional Council of the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario
Statement by the Transitional Council of the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario
March 28, 2013

Incorrect information has been circulated by The Federation of Ontario Traditional Chinese Medicine Association (the Federation). Here are the facts:

• The Federation said that an injunction has been filed on March 27, 2013. In fact, this is not the truth. It is because their lawyer failed to file the documents in the proper court and failed to file the necessary documents. A judge has not heard any arguments. The lawyer for the Federation readily consented to the injunction being argued on May 30, 2013.

• The injunction does not impact the implementation of the April 1, 2013 deadline.

• The College comes into effect on April 1, 2013. This has been explicitly known throughout the traditional Chinese medicine community since April 2012.

• Practitioners who wish to perform the authorized controlled acts (communicating a traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis and acupuncture) must be registered with the College by April 1, 2013.

• Practitioners who wish to use the title “traditional Chinese medicine practitioner” or “Acupuncturist” must be registered with the College by April 1, 2013.

• If practitioners are not registered with the College by April 1, 2013 then they will be contravening provincial legislation if they perform the controlled act or use the protected title.

• Practitioners who wish to register with the College and have not yet submitted their applications before April 1, 2013, are invited to submit their applications. The College continues to receive and process applications after April 1, 2013.

• Despite what the lawyer for the Federation advised on March 27, 2013, practitioners should not disregard the April 1, 2013 date. If the practitioner intends to perform a controlled act and/or use the restricted titles as of April 1, 2013, then they need to ensure they are registered. If they are not, then the care provided to patients cannot include the authorized controlled acts and they cannot use the restricted title.

• It is not a requirement that members practise in English. It is a requirement that an applicant must be able to communicate in English or French “with reasonable fluency” in case of an emergency but special accommodations have been put in place for those applying for the Grandparented Class of Registration in order to accommodate those that do not speak English or French. Members are entitled to utilize the language of their choice, however, in the interest of patient care, a complete copy of therecords are to be maintained in either English or French.

• The College is not placing any prohibitions on patients who wish to utilize both TCM and traditional Western medicine.
