GST/HST exemption for acupuncture services

Exciting news from Revenue Canada!

The Revenue Canada Excise Tax Act (the Act) provides a GST/HST exemption for a supply of acupuncture services made after February 11, 2014, if the acupuncture service is rendered to an individual by a practitioner of acupuncture.

  • A “practitioner” of acupuncture is defined in Part II of Schedule V to the Act to mean a person who practises the profession of acupuncture and is either:
    • licensed or certified to practise the profession of acupuncture by a provincially established regulatory body if the acupuncture service is supplied in a province that regulates the profession of acupuncture; or
    • has the qualifications equivalent to those necessary to be licensed or certified in another province if the acupuncture service is supplied in a province that does not regulate the profession of acupuncture.

Repeated Cupping Reduces Cytotoxicity

Science Press Research Article

“Elevated natural killer lymphocyte cytotoxicity (NKc) has been linked with reproductive problems in women. Cupping therapy can decrease NK cell numbers, their activity and cytotoxicity. Low cost, safety, noninvasive nature and ease of administration make CT a promising approach for NKc down-regulation.”

What’s old is NEW again!

The use of dry cupping in musculoskeletal medicine

Summary

Cupping is an ancient technique used in treating pain and various disorders. Different techniques have been developed over time, however, applying a cup to create suc- tion over a painful area, is common to all. Dry or fire cupping, used on the intact skin, leaves bluish circular hematomas. Recently, interest in cupping has re-emerged and subsequently, several studies have begun to investigate the mechanisms of cupping therapy.

Mechanically, cupping increases blood circulation, whereas physiologically it activates the immune system and stimulates the mechanosensitive fibers, thus leading to a reduction in pain. There is initial scientific evidence that dry cupping is able to reduce musculoskeletal pain. Since cupping is an inexpensive, noninvasive and low-risk (if performed by a trained pra- ctitioner) therapeutic modality, we believe that it should be included in the arsenal of muscu- loskeletal medicine. It is essential to perform additional studies clarifying the biological mechanism and clinical effects of cupping.

Rio 2016 Olympic Superstars Use Acupuncture

If 19-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps does it for his health, then it’s gotta be good, right?

That’s what many are wondering after spotting cupping marks — those purplish circles — on the swimmer’s upper body poolside at the 2016 Olympics in Rio this week. Phelps also posted a shot of himself on Instagram being cupped last year

Phelps isn’t the only Olympic athlete sporting the circular purple markings. U.S. men’s gymnast Alex Naddour posted a recent selfie on Instagram showing a hint of cupping bruising. And some of his teammates have tried it, too.

Dr. Adam Perlman (executive director for Duke Integrative Medicine) said he first spotted an Olympic athlete with telltale cupping marks while watching the women’s gymnastic competition this past weekend with friends.

“I was pleasantly surprised to see cupping marks. It really speaks to this level of integration we’re seeing with many things that are considered complementary medicine,” said Perlman, who has tried cupping for back pain and said it gave him relief.
