The First Annual Canadian Conference on Acupuncture and Natural Healing held in Halifax July 9,10, was as a resounding success for its guests and participants!

The Conference with its focus on Cancer Care and the Future of Health Care in Canada, was inaugurated by MPP Kelly Regan, with congratulations from the Premier of Nova Scotia, and the mayor of Halifax.

The Conference tackled the question of integrative medicine with a panel discussion anchored by Dr. William LaValley, MD, who skyped in from Austin Texas. Dr. LaValley is a highly acclaimed, pioneer of integrative medicine. Present on the panel were representatives of Cancer Care Nova Scotia and Capital Health and by Dr. Diana Tong Li and Dr. Franklyn Chen.

Dr. Li and Dr. Chen as CMAAC and local CMAAC chapter president and vice president, figured prominently in staging the conference. Along with Joseph Starr, D. Dr. TCM they have been particularly active in pushing for higher standards of practice and for regulation in Nova Scotia.

The Conference was very well attended by acupuncturists and other health-care professionals as well as by cancer survivors. Part of the attraction was the 15 seminars presented by a wide variety of health-care professionals speaking on a wide variety of topics. Their goal was to familiarize the health-care community and public with what is available in the way of complementary medicine. Seminars featured included TCM, Japanese Medicine, naturopathy, craniosacral therapy, herbal medicine, counselling and homeopathy.

Dr. Robert Rutledge, a prominent radiation oncologist and assistant Dalhousie University professor, graced the conference with his keynote speech. Doctors from China’s prestigious Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine flew in to present on cancer research and on opportunities for higher learning through its MA and Ph. D programs.

The conference was staged at the Canadian College of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine- Atlantic Canada’s first college of acupuncture and TCM. The College has a special arrangement with Guangzhou University. The College helps recruit for these Guangzhou University programs and provides the option of taking these programs at the College.

This was a seminal event, rarely staged in Canada. And the Conference supporters are proud to have  accomplished it here in Nova Scotia.

Amongst those in attendance were Jane Cheung, representing CMAAC and a contingent of acupuncturists from Ottawa who took advantage of the lovely weather to explore Halifax and surroundings.

The outcome of the Conference was invitations from various public cancer-related organizations to host seminars on Acupuncture and TCM. The College also agreed to place more emphasis on cancer care in its student clinics and to bring in conventional medical specialists to help create an integrative approach to cancer care at the College.

One of the featured guests of the Conference was Dr. Aiko Hormann, an 82 year old minister and natural healer, who dropped in on her way to a conference in Zurich. Dr. Horman was a neuroscientist before turning to Christ for inspiration.

Dr. Aiko’s work combining science and spirituality, was highly appreciated by the audience.

It is hoped that with follow-up, this will be a breakthrough conference for acupuncture in Nova Scotia.

It has already helped bring the two other acupuncture associations with members practicing in Nova Scotia together with ATCMANS through their attendance at the Conference. These other two associations and ATCMANS are currently working on a memorandum of understanding which will set minimum standards of practice and education, to be presented to the government of Nova Scotia. It is hoped that going forward, all acupuncturists in Nova Scotia will have to graduate from minimum 2200 hour full-time programs offered by provincially recognized colleges.

Sincerely

Joseph Starr, D. Dr. Ac., Dr. TCM

Conference Opening Speech

Dr. Diana Tong Li the chair of this conference

As the chair of this conference it has been my pleasure to work with the many volunteers and supporters who stepped forward to help because they believe in natural medicine. They believe the community needs natural medicine.

On behalf of the conference, I especially want to thank the Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Association of Canada, and Guangzhou Chinese Medicine University for their support. We are pleased to welcome two members of the university who have travelled a long way to get here. I also want to thank Mary Beth Clark, for all her advice and support.

I want to welcome doctors from Ontario and other provinces who are attending the conference.

I want to thank the students of the Canadian College of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine and its staff for doing so much..

I want to thank all the seminar presenters and keynote speakers who have given of their time and energy. Some have travelled a long way from home. I want to thank Cancer Care Nova Scotia for its donation.

I want to thank councillor Mary Wile who is representing Mayor Peter Kelly and the City of Halifax.

Finally I would like to thank Kelly Regan, our local MLA for honouring the conference with her words of encouragement and the Government of Nova Scotia for its letter of support.

Our acupuncture associations have come together to host the conference. The purpose of the conference is to get practitioners together to share knowledge. It’s purpose is to increase public knowledge and give hope to patients.  Right now my clinic is treating 7 patients with cancer in concert with conventional medicine. They all feel fortunate to receive both forms of medicine at the same time.

They wish more cancer patients had the same opportunity.

As associations we have a responsibility to educate the public about the benefits of acupuncture and natural medicine. We have the duty to explain the benefits of acupuncture and natural medicine to our government. We also have a duty to reach out to doctors, and nurses and researchers and to build bridges. There is no better way to accomplish this than through the conference.

With the help of our volunteers and supporters we are determined to be an annual conference. We will become stronger because of this conference as both associations and practitioners. Through our conference, we hope the government will speed up the regulation of acupuncture. And hopefully the public will have greater awareness of the role acupuncture and natural medicine can play in the future of medicine.

 Thank You.

Holman Insurance Broker Ltd

President Dr. Qiu, General Director Dr. Lin of CMAAC:

 Re: Professional Liability Insurance Coverage

Holman Insurance Broker Ltd is an international insurance broker, through months of assessments of OCTCM including the course design and quality of teaching, the headquarter based in London England decided to offer a preferred rates of Professional Liability insurance to graduates, clinical intern students and current clinical TCM and Acupuncture practitioners.

Since I am also a member in good standing of the Association, I have therefore introduced the Association to the broker hoping the members of the Association can be benefited from this program. After working with them, they have agreed to provide the Professional Liability Coverage for the members of the association and consider the members in the same standards with Graduate from OCTCM.

Reasons to opt for Holman Insurance Broker Ltd are as below:

A.  Competitive pricing. Our previous insurance broker, HKMB charges rate starting at $500.00Cdn in premium for the Professional Liability Coverage; Holman Insurance Broker Ltd charges rate starting at $350.00Cdn in premium for the Professional Liability Coverage

B.  Greater range of coverage for the modality of professional practices. After negotiating with the insurance company, they have created a specialized program for TCM professionals.

C.  Portability of Insurance. The coverage allows practitioners to carry the insurance from one location to another, not restricted to one place, nor province within Canada.

D.  Include Sexual Harassment/Abuse type of coverage, which HKMB does not cover.

E.  Fast and efficient processing time.  72 hours of processing time from the initial application to final approval.

I hope the Association will introduce this insurance program as an option to all the members where everyone can be benefited from such comprehensive coverage.

Professionalism: Conduct

with Patients and Staff

專業:行為與患者和醫務人員

It has been reported in the news recently that there have been some instances of inappropriate conduct occurring in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine clinics.  CMAAC reminds its members that as a member of CMAAC, you are expected to conduct yourself in a professional and appropriate manner at all times when practicing acupuncture and/or traditional Chinese medicine.  To elevate TCM/A to a high standard of acceptance and practice within the medical community, it is vitally important that all practitioners act in a professional manner.  Not only should patients be treated with compassion and respect, but clinic and administrative staff should also be treated the same way.
